This iconic spot gives families a way to make memories with their little ones while enjoying a slice of Montana’s history. As a Missoula family photographer, I adore working with families to freeze magical moments, so I’m always looking for the next great recommendation. Here’s why I think you are going to adore this spot!

About the Carousel For Missoula

101 Carousel Dr, Missoula, Montana 59802

Carousel for Missoula all began when the cabinet maker, Chuck Kaparich, went before the Missoula City County in 1991. He stated, “If you give it a home and promise no one will take it apart, I will build a carousel for Missoula.” For Kaparich, this goal was deeply personal. As a child, he adored the carousel in Butte and wanted to share the same magic with the kids here. He was so eager that he already had four ponies that he had hand-carved. The group excitedly agreed, and a team of volunteers went to work. Together, they reconstructed over 16,000 pieces of the antique frame and put in 100,000 hours of work. Meanwhile, kids in schools collected pennies that they could devote to the cause. The end result was a gorgeous carousel that has brought joy to countless families all across the region.

The Experience

At Carousel for Missoula, they want your ride to be an experience. That’s why they have found fun ways to keep families coming back. All the ponies have been lovingly named, and you can ask for a checklist so you can mark the ones you ride. Maybe your child wants to take a spin on Marguerite with its golden mane and trademarked daisy, or maybe they want to meet Star Boy, one of the original four ponies carved by Kaparich. The horses are open daily year-round, so you can experience the magic whenever you’d like. I always recommend that my clients keep an eye on the calendar. They regularly offer Friday happy hours, during which you can buy and get one so you can double the experience.
