Plan Some Exciting And Beautiful Outdoor Adventures With These Kid-Friendly Hikes In Missoula

Maclay Flats Trail

Forest Rd 19155, Missoula MT, 59804

Maclay Flats Trail is a great kid-friendly hike for beginners in Missoula. As a well-marked loop with little elevation change, hikers of all abilities can enjoy the trail’s stunning mountain views no matter the season. Running next to the Bitterroot River, the Maclay Flats Trail is also a great spot to picnic or fish (with the proper license). Signs along the trail provide educational information about the local ecosystem, making it a great learning experience for your young ones. Horses and bikes are not allowed, however, and all pets must be on leash.

Holland Falls National Recreation Trail

Holland Connector Trailhead, 1998 Holland Lake Lodge Rd, Condon MT, 59826

The Holland Falls National Trail is a popular Missoula area easy/intermediate kid-friendly hike that offers rewarding views of Holland Lake and its surrounding waterfalls. At 3.5 miles with roughly 600 feet of elevation change, this is a trail that will provide ample exercise without leaving you out of breath. Though the trail is often traveled, it’s still recommended to bring bear spray.

Thompson Pass Revett Lake Trail

Revett Lake Trailhead, Forest Rd 266, Wallace ID, 83873

Just across state lines from Missoula, the Thompson Pass Revett Lake Trail is another easy, kid-friendly hike with breathtaking views of the local mountains and waterfalls. A roughly three-mile round trip journey with 500 feet of elevation change, the Thompson Pass Revett Lake Trail is just challenging enough to make reaching its end even more rewarding. I recommend hiking this trail in the fall or spring to take advantage of the area’s beautiful foliage and wildflowers.

Blodgett Overlook Trail

Blodgett Overlook Trailhead, Hamilton, MT, 59840

The Blodgett Overlook Trail is an easy/intermediate trail that takes full advantage of the rugged beauty of Montana’s mountains. This 1.5-mile trail features a gentle slope as it switchbacks 500 feet up into the wilderness. It also offers plenty of overlook benches along the way for you to rest and take in the views. Hikers should stay wary, however. The area is known for its wildlife, and visitors have even had close encounters with moose! Those interested in hiking the Blodgett Overlook Trail should start on the Canyon Creek Trail and then head right at the fork, indicating the Blodgett Overlook TR #101.
