As a Missoula family photographer, I’m always on the lookout for inclusive, creative spaces where families and individuals can connect, grow, and express themselves. One such gem in our community is BASE Missoula, a vibrant, all-ages, all-abilities social and activity center that truly embodies the spirit of inclusivity. Whether you’re seeking a supportive environment for your child, a place to explore your own creativity or simply a welcoming community, BASE offers a multitude of opportunities to engage and thrive. It’s the kind of place where everyone is encouraged to show up exactly as they are—no pressure, no judgment, just open doors and open hearts. And in a world that often feels rushed or divided, that kind of space feels especially rare and meaningful.

BASE Missoula, which stands for “Building Awareness, Supporting Each Other,” is a Summit Independent Living program. Located in the Old Warehouse Building next to Draught Works, BASE serves as a safe and welcoming space for individuals of all ages and abilities to explore the arts, learn self-advocacy, and develop essential life skills. It’s a place where everyone is encouraged to be themselves, connect with others, and find their own path to success.
The heart of BASE Missoula lies in its programming. Throughout the week, you’ll find events and activities that center on connection, self-expression, and fun. From improv workshops with local comedians to all-abilities yoga, film-making experiences, art clubs, and game nights, BASE creates opportunities for people to come together and try something new. Every offering has a base with inclusion in mind. No prior experience is needed, and there are no expectations to perform. Just show up as you are and be part of something meaningful. Their BASE Talks podcast, led by youth with disabilities, is another example of how they amplify voices and build leadership from within the community.
What makes BASE Missoula truly special is its ability to bring people together across age, background, and ability. Events like film screenings, art showcases, and open mic nights give participants the chance to share their talents and build confidence. It’s also a place where friendships naturally form, advocacy becomes second nature, and creativity is encouraged at every turn. The sense of belonging here is tangible, and it’s what keeps families and individuals coming back week after week.
Places like BASE Missoula are a reminder of what makes this community so incredible. It’s not just about programs. It’s about people showing up for each other, making space for one another, and celebrating what makes each person unique.
As a Missoula family photographer, I love capturing that same spirit in the families I work with. Real joy, connection, and individuality. If you’re looking for a place that embraces your family just as you are, then BASE is absolutely worth discovering. And if you’re ready to preserve some of your own family’s beautiful, messy, magical moments, I’d love to help. Let’s make something meaningful together.
