As a Missoula family photographer—and a mom—I’m always looking for places that blend fun with learning. The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula is one of those rare spots that makes history come alive in a way kids can touch, climb, and truly understand. It’s not just about exhibits behind glass—it’s about stories, spaces, and experiences that spark imagination and curiosity in every age group. So, keep reading to learn more about this awesome place!

About the Historical Museum At Fort Missoula

3400 Captain Rawn Way, Missoula, MT 59804

Set on 32 acres of grassy grounds and shaded trees, the Historical Museum sits on the original site of a 19th-century military fort. It was established in 1975 to preserve the rich and complex history of Missoula and western Montana—from Native American heritage to pioneer life to military stories and beyond. With over 20 historic buildings and thousands of artifacts, the museum gives families the chance to literally walk through time.

What makes it extra special is its outdoor space. You’re not confined to a traditional indoor museum experience—kids can explore log cabins, railcars, and military buildings while you all enjoy a peaceful walk in the sunshine.

All You Can Experience At The Historical Museum At Fort Missoula

The Historical Museum offers a mix of indoor exhibits and open-air displays that make it super engaging for little ones. Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibits focusing on different eras and communities, often with interactive elements that make learning feel like play. Outside, kids can climb aboard a historic locomotive, peek into an old schoolhouse, or explore the fire tower—all while soaking up local stories.

It’s the kind of outing where everyone learns something new without it feeling like a school field trip. You set your own pace, and there’s room for strollers, picnic blankets, and plenty of questions along the way.

Specialty

Throughout the year, the Historical Museum At Fort Missoula hosts family-friendly events like Harvest Festivals, Living History Days, and hands-on activity sessions designed especially for children. They also offer seasonal exhibits and community programming that connect kids with the past in creative ways—from blacksmith demonstrations to old-fashioned games.

Many of the buildings are open for self-guided exploration, which means your kids can go from “just looking” to really experiencing history up close. It’s a space inviting curiosity and movement, not one where you must keep saying, “Don’t touch that.”
