spectrUM Discovery Area was started in 2007 after a chemistry professor decided the Missoula community needed a hands-on children’s museum and science center. He got support from some of his colleagues and went to work creating a spot where kids could engage with the subject. They started with a humble mobile center in 2009 that traveled around to local schools. It was such a hit that the area expanded in 2013. Today, it enjoys a permanent spot in the Missoula Public Library. So your family can stop by and discover all the joy in science. The best part? This area is free for all. You can come as often as you’d like without breaking the bank!
Services
While there are a lot of things to love about this Missoula children’s museum, my favorite thing is that they are always switching things up! Each month, you can head over to the calendar to check out which exhibits they are currently offering. Once you arrive at the library, you can check out displays that teach your child all about physics, geology, and anatomy. Your child can go through self-guided activities, or they can join for group guided activities where a leader will chat about the topics in an engaging manner. This is going to be their chance to participate in hands-on activities that will teach them lessons that will actually stick! Whether your child loves STEM or would prefer to spend some time learning about dinosaurs, this museum has something for them.

Throughout the year, spectrUM constantly has some new ways for your Missoula children to participate in the museum lessons. Their camp is definitely a local favorite! During spring break, your child can hang out here. They will be led through different activities while making long-lasting friendships. The museum also has other options, such as after-school clubs for kids ages 6-10. With this choice, you can choose to pay for a day, or you can join the club. Then, send your child throughout the entire semester. No matter what you choose, your child is going to have the time of their life learning something new!
